Description

Grunewald has always been Berlin's most popular and most expensive residential area. Since 1890 the powerful and famous have been living here in extravagant houses. Most of the magnificent villas still stand as they once did when they formed the centre of social Berlin. The history of Berlin-Grunewald is the story of its inhabitants and their fates from the imperial era to National Socialism. This is where feudal celebrations were held, the latest developments discussed, music was made with Albert Einstein, books were written, new cinema films were planned and politics were made. In no other neighborhood in Berlin did so many famous writers, actors, musicians, bankers, merchants and politicians meet, who led an intensive social life with jour fixe and five o` clock tea. Follow us to the former addresses of Samuel Fischer, Walther Rathenau, Vicki Baum, Walter Benjamin, Lion Feuchtwanger, Joachim Gottschalk, Gustaf Gründgens, F.W. Murnau, Grethe Weiser, Romy Schneider, Harald Juhnke and many others.

Your Grunewald tour starts at Kurfürstendamm with an introduction to its creation and the idea of building a new villa district in the west of Berlin. [for tour on foot or by bike: from Bismarckplatz] The Ku`damm was already the "jwd" (janz far out) for the "old" Berliners, so at first no one could imagine that at its end would lie the beginning of Berlin's most desirable residential area. You will discover with us about 20 villas of famous personalities, splendidly laid out squares, one of the oldest fire stations in Berlin and the Grunewald train station with the memorial platform 17, from where the deportation trains departed.
